The Shagya Arabian typifies the Arab horse in every respect but with more bone and substance, standing at between 15.0hh and 16.2hh with at least 7 ½” of bone. The Shagya is 90% Arabian.
The race was founded on the Arab stallion, Shagya, a horse of the Kehil/Siglavi strain imported to Babolna, Hungary in 1836, he was tall for an Arab standing at 15.2½hh. He was purchased by Prince Puckler-Muskau who admired his perfect symmetry.
The stud at Babolna was founded in 1789 and was at that time an Imperial Stud. The Shagya Arab was the culmination of a long term project to breed and produce cavalry horses for the Hapsburgs, their Imperial Cavalry were always mounted on Shagya.
A friend said to me “Of course the Shagya is brave, they were bred to charge cannon fire and bullets”
Elizabeth Empress of Austria and Hungary, known as SISIS was a wonderful horsewoman who loved the hunt. The Shagya was a great favourite.
The Foundation Stud at Babolna is today part of the Hungarian National Stud and continues to breed Shagya Arabs and maintain the 200 year old closed stud book.
The influence of the Shagya is important in warmblood breeding. Ramiro Z is a grandson of Ramzes an Anglo-Shagya stallion, often called the sire of the century, he was born in Poland in 1937. It was estimated that more than 45% of horses competing in the WEG at Achen and Kentucky had Ramzes in their back pedigree.
Milton’s dam Aston Answer was a Grand Prix Show Jumper in her own right. Although registered as a British Warmblood, her pedigree is that of an Anglo-Shagya, descended from BASA Shagya XII-3, imported to England from Hungary in 1930’s. BASA was owned by Henry Wynmalen, he was used for dressage displays. Henry Wynmalen was given a Gold Medal by the BHS in 1961 for his services to British Dressage.

La Race a été fondée par un étalon arabe, Shagya, un cheval de la souche Kehil/Siglavi importé à Babolna en Hongrie, en 1836, il était grand pour un arabe toisant155 cm. Il a été acheté par le Prince Pückler-Muskau qui admiraient sa symétrie parfaite.
Le Haras de Babolna a été fondé en 1789 et était à ce moment-là un haras impérial. L’Arabe Shagya est l’aboutissement d’un projet à long terme pour produire des chevaux de cavalerie pour les Habsbourg, leur Cavalerie Impériale étaient toujours montés sur Shagya.
Un ami m’a dit « bien sûr, que le Shagya est courageux, ils ont été élevés pour charger le canons et les balles »
Impératrice Elizabeth d’Autriche et de Hongrie, appelée SISIS a été une merveilleuse cavalière qui aimait la chasse. Le Shagya a été un de sa grand favori.
Haras de Babolna appartient aujourd'hui au Haras National Hongrois et continue à élever des reproduire arabes Shagya et a maintenir le Stud-Bookvieux de 200 ans.
